To be a dog

Poetry, DS Maolalai

I sit in the spare room/office/box

bedroom – lean back and type

out my poems. in the sitting

room/kitchen my wife

watches a movie about a woman

with depression getting on

with her wedding day.

this evening she's annoyed

I've been smoking. I'm convinced

that it's how I'm inspired.

I try not to read into statements

like this; try to just write

them down honestly. to be a dog

is I think the most

honest thing. to walk

and to take in the world

like the air through a hvac.
